Nicknamed “Tiger Woods of Poker”, Phil Ivey is rightly considered the most feared poker player, for both cash and tournament poker. Some players even consider him the best poker player ever. He is known for aggressive poker style and piercing eyes, which never give out what cards is he holding.

Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, California in 1976. Soon his family moved to New Jersey where he was introduced to poker by his grandfather who was his first poker teacher.

By the age of 16, Phil Ivey was playing backroom games and wiping them clean. At the age of 18 he started going to Atlantic City to play at live games under the alias “Jerome” and using his fake I.D., even though he was underage. He disclosed his real identity only when he turned 21 and apologized to everyone at the casino and started playing under his real name.

After this, the Poker gods smiled on our man Phil Ivey and his Poker career started rising.

WSOP 2000 marked the announcement of the legend of Phil Ivey to the international poker scene. After making his presence felt by finishing 12th in the $1500 Seven Card Stud event and then 5th in the $2000 No Limit Holdem event, he stamped his presence by going on to win his first WSOP Bracelet at the young age of 24 by defeating Phil Helmuth and Amarillo Slim in the $2500 Pot Limit Omaha event. He won $ 195,000 for that win which according to Phil Ivey is his sweetest poker moment.

In 2002, Phil went on to win three more WSOP Bracelets in three different games, Seven Card Stud, Stud Hi/Lo and S.H.O.E, thus tying with Phil Helmuth and Ted Forrest for most WSOP Bracelet wins in one year.

He sealed the envelope on his Poker greatness in 2005 by winning the $5000 Pot Limit Omaha event and winning his 5th WSOP Bracelet and $ 635,603 in cash.

Thus, he had won 5 WSOP Bracelets before the age of 30 and has his sight set on winning at least 30 WSOP Bracelets in his career. There is no doubt that with the way he is playing, he will achieve that goal. He almost won 2 more bracelets in 2006 WSOP when he ended up finishing 2nd and then 3rd in Omaha Hi/Lo and H.O.R.S.E events respectively. One more near miss came in 2007, when he finished 2nd in the $5000 World Championship Seven Card Stud event.Phil Ivey secured his first Million dollar plus tournament victory in 2005 by winning the Monte Carlo Millions. Phil Ivey added more feathers to his cap by winning the Full Tilt Poker Invitational tournament just 24 hours after the million-dollar win.

His biggest win in his career came this year in Feb 2008, when he won $9000 NL Holdem – Championship event of the WPT ( L.A. Poker Classic) in Los Angeles. He got $ 1,596,100 ( 1.5 Million + ) for his biggest paycheck.

He is also part of “The Corporation”, which is a group of top high-stakes players in the world who came together to take up billionaire banker Andy Beal in many high-stake heads-up games. Phil Ivey is famous for winning $16 Million for “The Corporation” from Andy Beal.

He his a regular winner at the “Big Game”, the $4000/$8000 cash game at the Bellagio where he plays against some of the best in the world like Doyle Brunson, Ted Forrest, Jennifer Harman and Barry Greenstein to name a few.

It is said that his tournament winnings of more than $10 Million, which places him at number seven in all time money list, is nothing compared to is overall winnings at the cash games.

It is said that by the time he finishes his careers in poker (Poker careers never finish ;-) ), he will be unanimously recognized by the poker fraternity as the greatest ever poker player.
