Nicknamed “ Tiltboy”, Phil Gordon believes in living life King size. He has done so much in his life until now, which is impossible for anyone of us to think in a entire lifetime.
Born in 1970 in Texas, he learnt poker from his Aunt Lib at the age of 7. He used to visit her house in Columbia, South Carolina every summer and they used to play penny ante five –card draw every night around the kitchen table.
He grew up in Stone Mountain, Georgia, a small suburb of Atlanta. At the age of 15, he got a National Merit Scholarship and entered the Georgia Institute of Technology from where he graduated with a degree in Computer Science in 1991.
He joined Lockheed Missiles and Space Company after graduation. From there, he moved to Netsys Technologies as their first hired employee. Cisco Systems acquired Netsys Technologies in 1996 for $95 Million, and he became a millionaire from the share that he got out of it.
Phil left on a around the world trip which took him across six continents and fifty countries in the next six years. When he got back to USA, he settled down in Nevada and started taking interest in the game of Poker.
In 2001, Phil Gordon played his first WSOP championship event and went on to finish 4th and win $399,610. He was featured in the documentary called “ Inside the World Series of Poker” by Travel Channel.
He followed it by making it to two final tables at the 2002 WSOP and came 6th in the $ 2,000 Pot Limit Hold'em followed up by 3rd in the $ 2,500 Omaha Hi/Lo Split.
He was invited by UltimateBet to WPT first tournament in Aruba, which he won by beating the top players in the world that time for a cool $ 250,000 paycheck.
Subsequently, in 2004, he won the $ 5,000 WPT No Limit Hold'em Championship Final Day Bay 101 Shooting Stars tournament by defeating Chris Moneymaker and pocketed $360,000.
Since then, Phil Gordon has cashed in at the WSOP many times. His biggest career money win came in November 2006, when he won the Fulltiltpoker.net Championship in Las Vegas for a sum of $600,000.
Apart from his Poker exploits, Phil is also an expert at the game of Bridge and has won 2 National Bridge competitions in the USA.
Phil Gordon became inclined towards the media side of the game of poker. He has been involved with many events and programs, both, as a commentator and host. It stated with Phil providing expert commentary for the WSOP in 2003. He also co-hosted one of the most successful poker shows, “ Celebrity Poker Showdown” for seven seasons before stepping down in 2006. In 2006 and 2007, Phil Gordon provided live commentary for ESPN’s live pay-per-view telecast of the WSOP final table.
Phil Gordon has also written 3 books on poker, namely, Poker-The Real Deal, Phil Gordon’s Little Green Book : Lessons and Teachings in No Limit Hold 'em, and Phil Gordon's Little Blue Book: More Lessons and Hand Analysis in No Limit Hold 'em. He followed it up with an award winning DVD called Expert Insight: Final Table Poker.
The DVD is distributed by a company called Expert Insight, which has been founded by Phil Gordon. The company has since diversified in producing more DVDs from other sports also.
All his books have been very successful and are among the best sellers in Poker category. Phil Gordon regularly writes columns for various magazines and hosts a podcast called “ The Poker Edge” for ESPN.com.
Ever since his Aunt Lib, died of Liver Cancer in 2002 , Phil Gordon has been associated with the cause of raising funds for the “Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation” . He launched an initiative called “Bad Beat on Cancer” and asks poker players to pledge 1% of their earnings to the cause of cancer research.
His current tournament winnings stand at more than $1.8 Million, which places him at number 211 in all time money list.
