Cyclona (Clonie) Gowen got her name from the fact that she was born during a powerful storm. Clonie Gowen grew up in Kiowa, Oklahoma and was actively involved in sports in her high school. She was part of the basketball team and came 7th in the high jump competition at the state level.
At the age of 15, Clonie was crowned Miss Teen Oklahoma.
Her boyfriend’s father taught Clonie Gowen poker. She used to travel to Shreveport, Louisiana to play poker on weekends and started having a good success at it.
In 2002, when Clonie had gone to Costa Rica on a scuba diving trip, she got to know about the WPT events happening there and decided to participate. She came 10th in the field of 134 players. This earned her an invitation to the WPT Ladies Night Invitational event in 2003, where she made her first impact on the poker world by beating a field consisting of players like Annie Duke and Jennifer Harman to take the title. The event was broadcast on TV and made her famous overnight.
She followed it up by coming 3rd in the $ 20,000 No Limit Hold'em FullTiltPoker.net Championship held in Las Vegas in July, 2005. Same year, in December, Clonie Gowen came 4th in the $ 2,000 No Limit Hold'em , Fourth Annual Five Diamond World Poker Classic at Bellagio, Las Vegas.
In 2006, Clonie cashed in two WPT and two WSOP events.
Ever since then, she has achieved the unique feat of winning “Poker After Dark” three times, with the last win coming as recently as in September 2008.
2008 has been the best year of Clonie’s career till now. She cashed in 4 WSOP and 1 WPT events this year. Her biggest win also came in 2008 when she won the $ 5,000 No Limit Hold'em, Bellagio Cup IV at Bellagio, Las Vegas in July 2008 for an amount of $437,775, which is her highest tournament cash win.
She is currently riding the poker luck of her life. She just won the $ 5,000 No Limit Hold'em - Championship Event of the 2008 World Poker Open held in Tunica on 28th Oct 2008 for an amount of $193,224.
Clonie Gowen is on the board of directors of the United State Poker Association. She has been a guest commentator for the Ultimate Poker Challenge as well as for the European World Poker Championship. She regularly writes for the All In magazine and is a partner in a Poker school.
Her tournament winnings are more than $1.5 Million, which places her at number 253 in the all time money list and 6th in Women’s all time list.
